Welcome to Hipspeak, an email series breaking down one word per issue of slang from Gen Z and Gen Alpha.
Let’s get one thing straight: if you’ve ever said “rad”, “sick”, or “talk to the hand”, you have come to the right place. Don’t worry, I’m not here to diss you. This is a judgement-free zone.
Slang has always evolved. The difference now? Gen Z and Gen Alpha have created a linguistic alliance so dumbfounding, it can make a perfectly literate adult feel like they’ve accidentally walked into a conversation conducted entirely in code.
That’s where I come in. I’m Ms. Lacey, your eyes and ears in real classrooms, decoding conversations that sound like they were generated by a malfunctioning Wi-Fi router.
Together, my (real, pseudonymized, human) students and I will make sure you’re never left drowning in the Gen (Z)alpha semantic sauce again.
Ms. Lacey
Disclaimer: If you were not born in this century, I would not encourage you to incorporate this slang into your vocabulary. In attempts to connect to the younger generations, you will appear 'beg' and 'unc' (stay tuned, we'll unpack those terms).
Into it? Here's what you can do to help:
- Add "hello@hipspeak.com" to your contacts so we don't go to spam
- Forward this email to anyone who might need help decoding Gen (Z)alpha lingo
- Give us suggestions of words to define! (Just reply to this or any of our emails)
